If your idea of winding down is scrolling through your phone until your eyes burn, you’re not alone. Most of us know we should relax before bed, but when the evening finally comes, that intention usually falls apart somewhere between the couch cushions.

The good news? You don’t need a 90-minute spa ritual to sleep better. You just need a realistic transition between your busy day and your pillow.

As someone who spent years treating evenings like an extension of my to-do list, I’ve learned that the best routine is the one you’ll actually do. Here’s a simple 10-minute reset that signals to your body: the day is done.

Step 1: Dim the lights (2 minutes)

Your brain is sensitive to light. About 30 minutes before bed, start switching off overhead lights and turning on lamps. If you have warm-toned bulbs or candles, even better. This small environmental shift tells your nervous system that it’s time to shift gears.

Step 2: Do a brain dump (3 minutes)

Grab a notebook and write down everything circling your mind—tasks, worries, that random thing you forgot to buy. Don’t organize it. Don’t make it pretty. Just get it out of your head and onto paper. Think of it as closing the mental tabs you’ve had open all day.

Step 3: One slow body scan (4 minutes)

Lie down or sit comfortably. Close your eyes and slowly move your attention from your toes to the top of your head. Notice tension without trying to force it away. Breathe into tight spots. If your mind wanders, gently return to the body. You’re not trying to meditate perfectly—you’re just arriving in the present moment.

Step 4: Set a non-negotiable stop time (1 minute)

Pick a time when the phone goes face-down. Not in another room (unless that works for you), but at least out of hand’s reach. That minute of deciding to stop is often the hardest part, but it’s also the most powerful.

What if you miss a night?

You will. And it doesn’t undo the progress. Wellness isn’t about streaks—it’s about returning, again and again, with kindness.

Start tonight. You don’t need the perfect environment or the right pajamas. You just need ten minutes and a little willingness to let the day be over.
